The difference
A calendar shows you what is next. Routines reads what is next and then prepares you for it, using the notes, memory files, and meeting history already sitting on your Mac. A calendar client can point you at where that material lives through an integration, the way Fantastical recognizes a Granola meeting link and offers a Join button, and can start a Zoom AI Companion summary for you. Routines already holds it, because the notes and the meeting record are its own.
Each meeting gets a prep card that pulls your notes, your USER.md, and your past meeting history to brief you before the call. A focus field lets you tell the AI what to concentrate on, and prep notes are saved per meeting.
Open the app and a written Day Briefing narrates your schedule in one sentence, naming what is next and how much focus time you have first. It recomputes every 30 seconds and winds down after 4 PM when your meetings are done.

Calendar management

Privacy
The prep notes, summaries, and memory Routines builds around your day are stored on your Mac as markdown plus a local SQLite index, openable in Obsidian or any text editor and yours to keep. Your calendar events still live with your provider, such as Google Calendar, because that is where events are created and shared, but the AI layer on top stays local by default. Cloud Sync and Backup is off by default; turn it on and your vault, your meeting transcripts and your notes are copied to your Routines account so your devices share them. Writing your prep takes a model call, which either passes through Routines AI without being stored or goes straight to your provider on a key that sits in your macOS Keychain.
Honest take
Plenty of people will run both: Fantastical as the calendar, Routines as the assistant that reads it. That is a perfectly good answer too.
FAQ
Not in the Fantastical sense. Routines is an AI assistant that manages your calendar rather than a dedicated calendar client. It reads your Google Calendar, briefs you on your day, prepares you for meetings using your own notes, and lets you RSVP, reschedule, and join calls from the menu-bar popover. Fantastical is the better pick if you want a deep, standalone calendar grid across every Apple device.
Not with its own recorder. Fantastical for Mac 4.1.10, released March 4, 2026, added support for Granola.ai meeting links, so it recognizes a Granola link on an event and offers a Join button, the way it already handles Zoom or Google Meet. Its release notes also cover auto-starting Zoom AI Companion summaries, and version 4.1.17, released July 21, 2026, made the MCP server it includes usable by any AI app that supports MCP, after an MCP Connector for Claude shipped on the Mac starting in 4.1.10. For some people, yes; for others, they are complementary. If you mostly need an assistant that runs your calendar alongside your notes, meetings, and day, Routines can replace it. If you rely on Fantastical for natural-language event entry, calendar sets, availability scheduling, and apps on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, keep Fantastical. Routines is macOS only and does not try to match Fantastical as a pure calendar client.
Routines connects to Google Calendar, including multiple Google accounts, and you can choose which calendar each routine uses. Fantastical supports a wider range of calendar sources, including iCloud, Microsoft 365, Exchange, and CalDAV, so it covers more providers if that matters to you.
